Armenian parliament holding first meeting since elections

PanARMENIAN.Net – The newly-elected National Assembly is holding its first meeting on Monday, August 2, with a total of 107 lawmakers elected to the Armenian parliament.

In the June 20 snap elections, caretaker Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party won 54% of the vote (71 mandates), while Hayastan (Armenia) bloc headed by second President Robert Kocharyan secured 22% of the ballots (29 mandates). “I Have Honor” bloc is getting seven seats in the parliament.

President Armen Sarkissian and Catholiocs of All Armenians Karekin II are attending in the first sitting, which started with a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the 44-day way unleashed by Azerbaijan against Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) in late 2020.

The MPs are expected to elect the President and Vice-Presidents of the National Assembly, as well establish the Standing Committees and choose their chairs.
