PanARMENIAN.Net – Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan insists that the demarcation and delimitation of the borders with Azerbaijan should begin as soon as possible. Pashinyan made the remarks when introducing the government’s program to the National Assembly on Tuesday, August 24.
“I regret that it was not possible to achieve the intended result in spring due to political instability. The unstable situation on a number of sections of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is a serious threat to the start of such processes,” he said.
Pashinyan also noted that he remains committed to his proposal of both Armenian and Azerbaijani troops withdrawing from the immediate vicinity of the border to pave the way for demarcation and delimitation work. He maintained that it was thanks to that principle that the sides were able to work in the Tegh-Meghri section of the border.
The Prime Minister added that that active discussions are taking place on the deployment of Russian border guards. According to him, Armenia continues to engage with the CSTO, while the OSCE Minsk Group has been showing certain interest in the matter as well.
Azerbaijani forces violated Armenia’s border in several sections in the provinces of Syunik and Gegharkunik on May 12 and 13 and are still refusing to withdraw their troops from the area. Since then, almost a dozen Armenian servicemen have been killed in Azerbaijan’s shooting, a dozen others have been wounded, while six troops were captured on May 27, although four of them have already returned home.
