There was no country named Azerbaijan when Tigran the Great was negotiating with Pompeius, Pashinyan tells Aliyev

In the times of Tigran the Great (95-55 BC) there were only two nations in the region – Armenians and Georgians, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a panel discussion on Nagorno Karabakh held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

The remarks came in response to Azerbaijani President Ilhal Aliyev’s claims that Azerbaijanis constituted  70% of Yerevan’s population at the turn of the 19th century.

β€œWhen Armenian King Tigran the Great was negotiating with RΠΎman general Pompeius, there was no country named Azerbaijan,” he stated.

Speaking
about the Karabakh conflict settlement, PM Pashinyan said the negotiations
should take place within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmanship.

β€œWe
are working very intensively and we are ready to put serious efforts to bring
real difference and reach a real solution,” Pashinyan said.

HNikol Pashinyan then referred to the minor revolutions he has made in the negotiation process.

β€œMy perception is that it’s impossible to resolve this long-lasting conflict with one or two steps. We need micro-revolutions, transform them into mini-revolutions and then reach real breakthrough in negotiations,” the Armenian Prime Minister stated.

β€œOne of the micro-revolutions was that in September 2018 I announced that any solution should be acceptable to the peoples of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Nagorno Karabakh. This was a micro-revolution, because I was the first Armenian leader to say the solution should be acceptable to the Azerbaijani people, as well,” Pashinyan stated.

The
second micro-revolution, he said, was his call to social media users to stop
threatening and insulting each other, and try to use the new technologies to
understand each other better.

The Prime Minister then called out President Aliyev of Azerbaijan for the refusal talk to the people of Nagorno Karabakh.

He reminded that Nagorno Karabakh was recognized a party to the conflict and party to the negotiations by the OSCE. This happened twice on March 24, 1992 and during the OSCE summit in Budapest in 1994.

The Prime Minister also referred to the two ceasefire agreements signed between Nagorno Karabakh, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

On February 14, on the margins of the Munich Security Conference, Foreign Minister of Armenia Zohrab Mnatsakanyan met with Thomas Greminger, the OSCE Secretary General.

In this regard, the sides discussed collaboration in the framework of the OSCE Cooperation with Armenia program and ways to enhance its efficiency.

Foreign Minister of Armenia Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and Secretary General of the OSCE Thomas Greminger touched upon the process of the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the recent meetings held within its framework

The interlocutors highlighted the importance of consistent steps aimed at strengthening the environment conducive to peace and preparing the peoples for peace, as well as the importance of OSCE’s role within that framework.

Man City banned from European tournaments for two seasons

February 15, 2020 – 10:43 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) declared on Friday, February 14 it has banned Manchester City from European competitions for two seasons for β€œserious breaches” of financial regulations, CNBC reports.

The club, the 2019 champion of the English Premier League, was also fined 30 million euros ($33 million) by UEFA. The organization declared that the club β€œcommitted serious breaches” of UEFA’s licensing rules and Financial Fair Play Regulations, including β€œoverstating its sponsorship revenue in its accounts” for five years.

Manchester City, also known as β€œMan City,” has the right to appeal the ban.

β€œManchester City is disappointed but not surprised by today’s announcement by the UEFA Adjudicatory Chamber,” the club said in a statement.

The club also sharply criticized UEFA’s investigative process in its statement, saying the process was β€œflawed and consistently leaked,” so β€œthere was little doubt in the result.”

UEFA’s ruling would prevent Man City from playing in any European tournaments until the 2022-2023 season. The club is currently competing in UEFA’s Champions League, which is the highest profile tournament in professional football, and second overall to only the World Cup.

Sony struggling to keep PlayStation 5 price down – report

February 14, 2020 – 11:29 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Scarce components have pushed the manufacturing costs for Sony’s next PlayStation to around $450 per unit, forcing a difficult price-setting decision in its battle with Microsoft Corp., Bloomberg reports citing people with knowledge of the matter.

The Japanese conglomerate is preparing to gradually replace the six-year-old PS4 console, releasing its PlayStation 5 the same holiday season its archrival debuts the upcoming Xbox Series X. Sony typically finalizes a console’s price in February of the release year, followed by mass production in the spring. With the PS5, the company is taking a wait-and-see approach, said the people, asking not to be named because the details are private.

The PS4, released in 2013 at a retail price of $399, was estimated by IHS Markit to cost $381 to manufacture. With the $450 unit cost and a similar gross margin, the PlayStation 5’s retail price would have to be at least $470. That would be a hard sell to consumers, considering Sony’s most expensive machine now is the $399.99 PS4 Pro and is often discounted, according to Macquarie Capital analyst Damian Thong.

β€œConsumers will benchmark their expectations based on the PS4 Pro and PS4,” Thong said. β€œIf Sony prices above that, it would likely be to balance a need to offset higher materials cost, against risk to demand.”

Sony declined to comment.

The company’s biggest headache is ensuring a reliable supply of DRAM and NAND flash memory, with both in high demand as smartphone makers gear up for fifth-generation devices, according to people familiar with Sony’s operations. Samsung Electronics Co. just announced its Galaxy S20 product range, each variant of which will have 5G and a minimum of 12GB of RAM in the U.S.

He finished his hospitality studies at INFOBO and gained experience in various types of restaurants such as Michelin starred Bruneau and Chalet de la ForΓͺt.

It was at these restaurants that Karen discovered the real French cooking and the need of structure and hard work in the kitchen. At the famous La Paix restaurant of Chef David Martin, Karen also learnt the business aspects of running a restaurant.

The term normally refers to the annually published Michelin Red Guide, the oldest European hotel and restaurant reference guide, which awards up to three Michelin stars for excellence to a select few establishments.

The acquisition or loss of a star can have dramatic effects on the success of a restaurant. Michelin also publishes a series of general guides to cities, regions, and countries, the Green Guides.

Armenia quake in focus of new study on PTSD early treatment benefits

Armenia quake in focus of new study on PTSD early treatment benefits

February 15, 2020 – 11:51 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – In 1988, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck near the northern Armenian city of Spitak. The temblor destroyed cities and is estimated to have killed between 25,000 and 35,000 people, many of whom were schoolchildren.

The latest findings from a long-term, UCLA-led study reveal that children who survived the quake and received psychotherapy soon after have experienced health benefits into adulthood, Medical Xpress says.

The findings are particularly relevant today, said Dr. Armen Goenjian, the study’s lead author and a researcher at the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, given the increased frequency and severity of climate-related catastrophes such as hurricanes and wildfires.

This ongoing project is one of the first long-term studies to follow survivors of a natural disaster who experienced post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, more than five years after the event. The research tracks PTSD and depression symptoms in people who received psychotherapy as children, as well as those who did not.

The latest findings, published in the journal Psychological Medicine, also identified factors that contributed to the risk for PTSD and depression among the Spitak quake survivors, including whether their homes were destroyed, the severity of adversity they faced after the earthquake and whether they had chronic medical illnesses after the quake. People who experienced strong social support were less likely to develop PTSD and depression.

The researchers evaluated 164 survivors who were 12 to 14 years old in 1990, about a year and a half year after the earthquake. Of that group, 94 lived in the city of Gyumri, which experienced substantial destruction and thousands of deaths. The other 70 lived in Spitak, where the damage was far more severe and there was a higher rate of death.

A few weeks after the initial assessment, mental health workers provided trauma- and grief-focused psychotherapy in some schools in Gyumri, but not in others because of a shortage of trained medical staff.

“We were comparing two devastated cities that had different levels of post-earthquake adversities,” Goenjian said. “People in Spitak, who experienced more destruction, earthquake-related deaths and injuries but experienced fewer post-earthquake adversities, had a better recovery from PTSD and depression than survivors in Gyumri.”

Researchers interviewed survivors five and 25 years after the earthquake. They found that people from Gyumri who received psychotherapy had significantly greater improvements in both their depression and PTSD symptoms. On the 80-point PTSD-Reaction Index, for example, PTSD scores for the Gyumri group that received psychotherapy dropped from an average of 44 a year and a half after the earthquake to 31 after 25 years.

PTSD scores for people from Gyumri who did not receive treatment declined as well, but not as much: from 43 at one-and-a-half years to 36 after 25 years.

Among those in attendance were Western Prelate Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian; Prelacy Vica-General Bishop Torkom Donoyan; Reverend Ardak Demirjian; Western Prelacy Executive Council Chairperson Garo Eshgian, Vice-Chair Meher DerOhannessian, and Secretary Elizabeth Boyajian; members of the Prelacy Board of Regents, Armineh Papazian, Pattyl Aposhian Kasparian, and Arlene Mouradian-Zenian; St. Mary’s Church Board Member Christine Hovnanian; representatives from the Armenian National Committee of American Glendale Chapter including Chairperson Lucy Petrosian; the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Glendale Aharonian chapter; Homenetmen Ararat Chapter Executive Board Chair, Serge Grakasian; a representative from the office of Congressman Adam Schiff; California State Senator Anthony Portantino; California Assemblymember Laura Friedman; a representative from the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger; Glendale City Council Member Vartan Gharpetian; Glendale City Clerk Ardashes Kassakhian; Glendale Community College Board of Trustee Dr. Armine Hacopian; Glendale Unified School District Board President Dr. Armina Gharpetian; the school’s founders, Mr. and Mrs. Vahik and Alice Petrossian, and Mr. and Dr. Vahe and Armine Hacopian; and of course the school’s beloved benefactors of 30 years, Ralph and Savey Tufenkian, and the Tufenkian and Kalemkiarian families.

Alumni from the school, currently in high school, greeted guests presenting them with special 45th anniversary lapel pins, and ushered them into the Oschin Pavilion where the Endeavor Space Shuttle is stationed. The awe-inspiring hangar space was adorned with large-scale architectural renderings of the prospective Tufenkian campus, as well as a partial architectural model painted by the school’s kindergarten students. A colorful art exhibition featuring framed watercolor paintings by every single one of the school’s current students, accompanied by titles chosen by the young artists, was on display for all to enjoy. Also entertaining guests were roaming photographers and a photo station featuring an astronaut carrying the Tufenkian flag, and live orchestral music. At their seats, guests received the thematic 45th Anniversary Tufenkian Album, courtesy of the artistry of Helena Grigorian, featuring a bronze keepsake bookmark, congratulatory messages to the school as well as personal salutations and memorable photos from all of the program’s donors.

Following opening remarks by the night’s Master of Ceremonies Gevik Baghdassarian, an alumnus of the school and current member of the School Board, and invocation by his Eminence Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, dinner was served while a vocalist performed jazz and Armenian standards.

Artin Shaverdian, Chair of the School Board, then introduced a film by Sevag Vrej Koundakjian, especially made to mark this milestone anniversary, highlighting the value of the school in the community and its students’ lives, the significance of the school’s emergent curriculum and its teachers and administration, as well as to describe the value of the modernization and expansion project.

Shaverdian then addressed the audience by first expressing his immense gratitude to the night’s donors, all guests, and the school’s longstanding benefactors Mr. and Mrs. Ralph and Savey Tufenkian. He also took a moment to acknowledge the unmatched dedication of the school’s faculty and staff most of whom were present.

β€œThis campaign is rooted in history but framed for tomorrow,” he said. β€œIt honors the vision of our founders and the promise of our children.” He appealed to the audience to continue to support the Tufenkian 2025 Project, a project which seeks to add approximately 3,200 square feet of new building area consisting of classrooms and multi-purpose rooms, and to modernize the remaining classrooms and outdoor areas to better align the school’s emergent curriculum with its campus. Mr. Shaverdian stressed that with the steadfast support of the community and the generous donors in attendance, the school was looking forward to meeting again in 2025 to mark the conclusion of the campaign, but to not forget that the β€œbroader campaign for the idea of Tufenkian Preschool is everlasting.”

Shaverdian concluded his remarks by announcing the names and commending the great work of all those individuals who had volunteered endless hours to bring this gala celebration to fruition. He then introduced a video greeting from Congressman Adam Schiff who congratulated the school and lent support to its future successes. Official State of California proclamations were presented by State Senator Portantino and Assemblymember Laura Friedman both of whom also conveyed endearing messages of reverence for the academic institution. A special recognition was also presented by a representative from Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s office.

Baghdassarian then joined Shaverdian on stage to discuss specifics of the fundraising campaign for Tufenkian 2025. Baghdassarian implored the audience to continue on its generous path and offer long-term support to the project. Together, they launched the school’s Mobile Cause/text-to-give service which facilitates instant giving via a mobile smart phone. The excitement of the audience was palpable in the immediate stream of new donations all of which were reflected instantly on the big screen for all to see. Shaverdian and Baghdassarian then recognized three visionary donor families Mr. and Mrs. Armen and Katherine Panossian, Mr. and Mrs. Bobken and Hasmik Amirian, and Mr. and Mrs. Levik and Romina Hagobian.

The school’s Director, Arsine Aghazarian, then took the stage to acknowledge the Tufenkian family, all invited guests and dignitaries in attendance, expressing her gratitude to lifelong community supporters, alumni and parents of alumni of the school. She gave brief historical highlights from the school’s 45-year journey and called up to the stage, to receive special recognition and a gift, founding members of the school Mr. and Mrs. Vahik and Alice Petrossian, and Mr. and Dr. Vahe and Armine Hacopian, along with former school Director Dr. Ida Karayan. Rouben Gourjian, one of the founding members, was not in attendance. She thanked these valued members of the school’s family for their vision, their dedication and their continued guidance and support of the school. Gifts were presented to the aforementioned honorees by the three teachers with the longest tenure at the school Aghavni Astoor, Ani Misserlian, and Ani Hovagimian.

She continued to thank the school’s Parent Support Committee’s (PSC) Gala Committee, who under the effective leadership of Christine Zohrabians, worked resolutely to make this celebration memorable.

Aghazarian then individually acknowledged all current faculty and staff, and those who had significant roles at the school through the years. On behalf of the ANC Glendale Chapter, Chairperson Lucy Petrosian also presented recognition certificates to each teacher and staff member. Young alumni volunteers escorted those being recognized to receive commemorative gifts.

To conclude her remarks, Aghazarian shared heartwarming words about the entire Tufenkian family, specifically Mr. and Mrs. Ralph and Savey Tufenkian who have never faltered in their encouragement, support, and guidance of the school since the tragic death of their son Richard, 30 years ago. β€œWe owe our success to our gracious and generous benefactors, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph and Savey Tufenkian, and to the extended members and relatives of the Tufenkian Family, Paul and Sandra Kalemkiarian, and Greg and Caroline Tufenkian,” Aghazarian said as she presented Mr. and Mrs. Tufenkian with gifts of appreciation.

The prelate referenced the poignancy of the project’s moniker β€œBuilding Together, Nurturing Generations.” He reflected on the significance of community support in the success of all of our diasporan endeavors and underscored the paramount value of structured early education. With much delight, the Archbishop then announced a surprise $100,000 donation from Mr. and Mrs. Ralph and Savey Tufenkian to mark this momentous occasion and in support of the Tufenkian 2025 Modernization and Expansion Project. The audience roared in excitement and the collective funds raised passed the half a million-dollar mark.

Accomplished alumna Sareen Habeshian then spoke of the positive influence of the school on her academic journey and professional career. And, to conclude the program, Max Tufenkian and Sara Cipolla, nephew and niece of the late Richard Tufenkian, both alumni of the school, paid a moving tribute to their uncle. Max described growing up with stories of his uncle with his family members always describing him as the most loving and lovable guy. Sara reminisced about her days at Tufenkian and announced her excitement at becoming a Tufenkian parent in the forthcoming academic year. Both shared their great pride in their family and their family’s immeasurable love for the school.

The evening came to a festive close by graciously donated performances by popular Armenian singers Armenchik and Super Sako. Guests parted with gifts of appreciation in the form of beautifully boxed wines donated by the Kalemkiarian family of Wine of the Month.

It is notable that this gala’s success was a direct result of the tireless work of PSC members who spared no effort to engage the community in solicitation of support for the school. β€œThe generosity of our community’s business owners and service providers was truly heartwarming,” commented Zohrabians, β€œWe received an overwhelming amount of in-kind donations, unimaginable discounts, and direct gifts of services and supplies. It truly helped us honor our fiduciary duty to the school. This is not just a reflection of the greatness of our school but also that of the kindness of our community.”

By the end of the evening, $535,000 was raised in support of the Tufenkian Modernization and Expansion Project. β€œOur community is a force to be reckoned with when it supports a worthwhile project. We are eternally grateful to every dollar donated today. We are doing all this for the kids. They are the center and goal of all of our efforts,” Baghdassarian stated.

In a message to Assad Catholicos Karekin II hails Armenian Genocide recognition

His Holiness Karekin II,
Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, has sent a letter to President
of the Syrian Arab Republic Bashar al-Assad to thank him on behalf of the
Armenian people for the unanimous adoption by the Syrian People’s Council of a
resolution recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide by the Syrian
People’s Council.

β€œThe condemnation of
crimes against humanity and negation of denial is a firm guarantee that new
genocides and crimes against religious and ethnic discrimination can be
prevented and a peaceful world can be built,” His Holiness said in the letter.

β€œThe Syrian people today
reaffirmed the commitment and determination of their ancestors, who gave
shelter to the children of our nation exiled during the difficult years of the
Armenian Genocide. Decades ago in the wilderness of Deir ez-Zor, during the
presidency of your well-known father, Hafez al-Assad, the construction of the
Holy Martyrs Church became another record of the Syrian authorities’ position
on the Armenian Genocide,” the Catholicos added.

β€œWe have repeatedly witnessed
the undeserved kindness and attention of you and your people towards our people,
vivid expressions of which are the Armenian sanctuaries, cultural and
educational institutions, numerous testimonies of the Syrian-Armenian
community’s remarkable life,” reads the letter of His Holiness.

His Holiness, expressing his
support to the pious people of Syria, wished that the desired peace and
tranquility in the country would be restored and the dreams of the bright life
of the brotherly people overcoming difficulties come true.

No Armenian in Jerusalem can be tempted by $3,000: Armenian Patriarchate responds to Jewish Press

The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem has provided clarification on the Jewish Press article titled β€œTurkey Working to Take Over Armenian Quarter in Jerusalem’s Old City,” in which the author first touches upon the Turkish attempt to close the Ilya Kahabadijan Museum of the Armenian Genocide.

β€œIlya Kahabadijan has a photo studio where he sells paintings by his grandfather and father and it’s not a museum dedicated to the Armenian Genocide. The studio is located in the Christian district of the Old City of Jerusalem and is owned by the Greek Patriarchate of Jerusalem,” Chancellor of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem Hovnan Baghdasaryan said in a statement.

With regard to the $ 3,000 grant offered to Armenians by Turks, he noted that virtually all Armenians in Jerusalem are in a socially secure position, and the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem has provided the socially disadvantaged with housing, work and food. Therefore, he said, none of the Armenians can be tempted by $3,000.

β€œIt is important to note that no apartment has been sold in the Armenian district of Jerusalem recently. The Patriarchate of Jerusalem is the owner of both the property of both St. Jacob’s Monastery and all the properties of the Armenian Quarter,” the Chancellor said.

β€œNeighborhood apartments and
shops are leased either on a protected tenancy or an unprotected tenancy basis.
In the case of a protected lease, the tenant’s right to the property extends to
three generations. In case of unsecured lease, every month the tenant pays the Patriarchate
the sum agreed in the contract between the parties. The lease contract may be
terminated if the tenant does not respect any part of the contract,” he further
elaborated.

The tenants are mainly
Armenians. The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem does not sell property, he
added.

The Chancellor says, however, that the article has rightly noted that there has been a recent increase in the number of Turkish tourists in Jerusalem who once tore up the posters of the Armenian Genocide on the wall of the Armenian district. The police immediately complained about the case, and no such incident ever reoccurred.

β€œUnfortunately, however, it should be noted that such posters have been posted for decades and have repeatedly been torn by Jews. In addition, Turks have never written on the walls of the Armenian Quarter, while a well-known group called Tag Mechir has often made such markings on the walls of both Armenian and other Christian monasteries,” Hovnan Baghdasaryan concluded.

Man City banned from European tournaments for two seasons

Manchester City banned from Champions League for two seasons and fined €30m

Manchester City have been banned from European club competition in 2020/21 and 2021/22 after being found to have committed β€œserious breaches” of Uefa’s club licensing and financial fair play regulations, the BBC reports.

The reigning Premier League champions have also been fined 30m euros.

The decision is subject to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Manchester City say they are β€œdisappointed but not surprised” by the β€œprejudicial” decision and will appeal.

They added in a statement: β€œThe club has always anticipated the ultimate need to seek out an independent body and process to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence in support of its position.

β€œIn December 2018, the Uefa chief investigator publicly previewed the outcome and sanction he intended to be delivered to Manchester City, before any investigation had even begun,” the club stated.

β€œThe subsequent flawed and consistently leaked Uefa process he oversaw has meant that there was little doubt in the result that he would deliver. The club has formally complained to the Uefa disciplinary body, a complaint which was validated by a CAS ruling,” the club said.

β€œSimply put, this is a case initiated by Uefa, prosecuted by Uefa and judged by Uefa. With this prejudicial process now over, the club will pursue an impartial judgment as quickly as possible and will therefore, in the first instance, commence proceedings with the Court of Arbitration for Sport at the earliest opportunity,” the statement concluded.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan pledges to do more to β€œhelp the team”

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has pledged to β€œhelp the team” and said February will be an β€œimportant month” for Roma ahead of the big match in Bergamo, Football Italia reports.

The Armenia international has been limited by injuries this term and has missed a lot of big games this term.

The 31-year-old is not happy with his record this season, despite having scored four times in 10 Serie A appearances in 2019-20.

β€œIt’s not good enough. I want to do everything to help the team,” Mkhitaryan told to Roma’s Matchday Programme. β€œ[I want to] score more goals, get more assists and help the team win.

β€œI feel better now. It’s a shame I couldn’t be there against Juventus or in the Derby. However, injuries happen, and I have worked hard to return.”

After sharing the points and playing great game against arch-rivals Lazio, the Giallorossi have lost to Sassuolo and Bologna in the League and are currently on a run of four games without a win across all tournaments.

The Giallorossi were eliminated from the Coppa Italia by Juventus and their last win came on January 19, against Genoa at the Marassi.

β€œIt’s normal for something like this to happen, anything can happen in football,” he added. β€œOne day you feel good and do well, but in the next something else happens and you don’t get results. It’s all normal in football – but we have to get to work and start believing in ourselves.”

Atalanta have taken advantage of the difficult spell and are now three points ahead on fourth in Serie A, and Mkhitaryan encouraged everyone at Roma to β€œtake responsibility”.

β€œWe know the importance of this match,” he said. β€œWe have to give our all to win, even if it won’t be easy. However, it will be a different game from the first one, when we lost 2-0.

β€œWe have a great squad and the manager will involve everyone. All of us must be ready and take responsibility in the next few games,” Mkhitaryan said.

β€œWe must be ready both physically and mentally, without thinking about how critical the moment is. We can’t put too much pressure on ourselves. This will be an important month for us,” the midfielder added.

Armenia Politics News Digest for Saturday, February 15, 2020

ITN-armenia-politics

This is the Daily Digest of political news for Armenia for Saturday, February 15, 2020. The notable stories are (we hope you enjoy them):

Unilateral actions will not help solve the Karabakh issue, Armenian PM says

Unilateral actions cannot help solve the Karabakh issue, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

β€œEven if we assume any Armenian authority can take unilateral action, it will not solve the problem, but will rather deepen it. Azerbaijan likes to talk about territories, but it is important to understand that we are talking about security,” the Prime Minister said.

β€œThe buffer zone Azerbaijan is talking about has been created, because peaceful settlements are being bombarded by Azerbaijan, forcing civilians, children to live in basements for years,” he stated.

The Prime Minister noted that
Azerbaijan is a country where a man is being glorified for killing an Armenian.

β€œIn 2004, NATO invites officers
from Armenia and Azerbaijan to Budapest under a peacekeeping program. In
Budapest, they attend joint seminars, and an Azerbaijani officer kills a
sleeping Armenian officer. The Budapest court sentences him to life in prison.
Some time later the Hungarian government decided to extradite the officer to
Azerbaijan. Upon arrival, the President of Azerbaijan signs a decree on the
release of the officer, who gets his entire salary paid, is given a flat, a
military rank, and receives the encouragement of the mass media,” Pashinyan
reminded.

β€œAnd when it comes to territory, we perceive
it as security. And first of all, not the Republic of Armenia, but the Republic
of Karabakh is not ready to compromise its own security, just as no country is
ready to compromise its security. That is to say, the solution to this situation
can only be linked to security guarantees that are not there. And they haven’t
been. And their absence has created the current situation,” he added.

Referring to his statement β€œKarabakh
is Armenia, full stop,” the Prime Minister said it has a very clear and
specific explanation.

β€œWe have said that Azerbaijan’s attack on Karabakh will be seen as an attack on the Republic of Armenia. The Republic of Armenia is the guarantor of the security of Karabakh. And this says everything,” he explained.

PM Pashinyan made it clear
that β€œwe have not seen any constructive step by Azerbaijan in the negotiation
process over the past one and a half year.”

β€œOn the other hand, I would
like to appreciate the fact with Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev we have managed
to reach an unprecedented low level of tension since our first meeting in September
2018.

β€œAnd I hope that, as a result
of constructive discussions, we will not only be able to maintain this
relatively stable and calm situation, but also move forward with de jure
settlement,” the Prime Minister concluded.

Recognition of past atrocities vital for preventing identity-based crimes, Armenia’s UN Ambassador says

Armenia has been taking
consistent measures to consolidate international efforts aimed at prevention of
the crime of genocide, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Mher
Margaryan said at the UN Security Council Open Debate on β€œPeacebuilding and
sustaining peace: transitional justice in conflict and post‐conflict situations.”

β€œRegrettably, we still continue witnessing hate crimes and atrocities against ethnic and religious groups, state-led policy of hatred, racial and ethnic profiling, glorification and justification of past crimes and dehumanization of victims,” he said.

β€œThe genocidal acts perpetrated against Christians, Yazidis and other communities by terrorist organizations committed in Syria and Iraq are stark reminders that denial of the crime and dehumanization of victims do not merely belong to history,” Armenia’s Permanent representative stated.

Mher Margaryan noted that the Armenian nation
has gone through the horrors of genocide in the beginning of the 20th century
and still continues to face the challenges of denial and justification of the
past crimes.

Hence, he said, Armenia has
been taking consistent measures to consolidate international efforts aimed at
prevention of the crime of genocide.

β€œJustification of the Armenian genocide at the
highest level by means of denigrating and insulting the dignity of the victims,
qualifying it as β€œthe most reasonable act” and manufacturing alternative
historical narratives profoundly hampers the efforts to ensure the realization
of the right to truth and non- recurrence,” Amb. Margaryan stated.

β€œArmenia is committed to supporting the efforts of the United Nations to promote transitional justice as an important element of the UN prevention agenda. Over the years we have initiated a number of Resolutions related to the prevention of genocide. Upon Armenia’s initiative the General Assembly designated 9 December as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime,” he reminded.

β€œRecognition and condemnation of the past atrocities is vital for preventing identity-based crimes, protecting the universality of human rights and achieving genuine reconciliation and sustainable peace,” he concluded.
